The Project
This £40m extension of the North Terminal at Gatwick Airport included refurbishment works to the terminal’s main passenger entrance.
The 8,300 m2 airport extension construction resulted in all British Airways passengers flying from Gatwick being processed through the North Terminal.
The main airport construction challenges were to install a waterproofing system that met all contractor programme requirements for speed of installation, return to site access and damage resistance.
Principal Contractor, Morgan Sindall PLC required a waterproofing product that could be applied quickly, trafficked immediately after application and simplified detailing at terminations and penetrations.
The membrane also needed to be highly damage resistant, because MEWP’s and a similar site plant had to traffic the membrane, with minimal additional protection measures, prior to installation of the glazed facades, the day after the membrane was installed.
The challenge also included a set of non-standard details for waterproofing penetrations and terminations, which were critical for the airport construction.
The upper forecourt at the airport passenger entrance was upgraded with a strengthening screed, insulated and re-waterproofed with SILCOR®spray liquid applied waterproofing.
SILCOR® is a rapid set polyurea, two component liquid waterproofing system with exceptional physical properties. The system has a BBA Certificate, and a European Technical Approval (ETA).
SILCOR® waterproofing is uniquely suited to meeting the operational needs mentioned above when waterproofing podium decks.
No leaks through the refurbished podium deck were reported during the airport construction programme or since project completion.
