Sheet Membranes Waterproofing: Built for Where It Matters Most

From deep basements to tunnel structures and podium decks - PREPRUFE® and BITUTHENE® deliver targeted protection at every level of construction

Across Australia and New Zealand, GCP, part of Saint-Gobain provides waterproofing solutions for some of the most demanding construction environments: basement and data centre structures, cut-and-cover tunnels, airports, hospitals, car parks, podium and roof decks, road and rail bridges. What these environments share is that waterproofing failure in any of them is costly, disruptive, and in most cases impossible to remediate without major structural intervention.

Sheet membranes are the foundation of GCP's below ground and sub-structure waterproofing capability. Two purpose-built systems address the full range of these conditions: one designed for structures waterproofed before concrete is poured, the other for structures protected after.

PREPRUFE® Plus is GCP's pre-applied sheet membrane, laid on prepared ground or formwork before the structural slabs or walls are cast. As concrete is poured, Advanced Bond Technology™ forms a permanent bond between membrane and structure, eliminating lateral water migration between concrete and the membrane, the primary failure mode in below-grade construction. PREPRUFE® 300R Plus is specified across basements, data centres, tunnels, and airport structures where depth, water table, and ground gas conditions demand the highest level of protection. With over 65 million m² installed across 75+ countries and a track record exceeding 30 years, it is the benchmark pre-applied waterproofing system in the ANZ market.

BITUTHENE® is GCP's post-applied sheet membrane range: cold-applied, self-adhesive membranes applied to cured concrete across basement walls, tunnel structures, bridge decks, car park slabs, and podium decks. Invented in 1965 and manufactured at GCP's ISO-certified Singapore facility since 1970, the BITUTHENE® range covers applications from standard below-ground waterproofing through to heavy vehicular-traffic structures, critical civil works, and environments where ground gas resistance is the primary specification requirement. BITUTHENE® 8000, the most advanced in the range, is specified where both hydrostatic loading and ground gas are present simultaneously.  BITUTHENE® 8000 waterproofing membrane has been tested to withstand more than 70m water head pressure and complies with the methane resistance requirements of BS 8485 as a gas barrier membrane, while also offering solar-reflective, quality-assured installation features.

On many projects, both systems operate together. PREPRUFE® below the slab, BITUTHENE® on the vertical structure above, connected through a fully integrated system that includes drainage composites, protection boards, waterstops, and liquid membrane detailing, all backed by GCP's local technical support and warranty programme.
